Staying safe in Gloucester

Safe Places in Gloucester

Butlers (#Bar103) safe zone

We have a great relationship with Butlers in Gloucester. If you are lost or in trouble whilst on a night out, speak to a member of the team and they will help you in any way they can. Some examples of when they can help include the following lost, though it is not exhaustive:

  • Call a taxi

  • Help you exit an uncomfortable situation safely

  • Drank too much

  • Lost

  • In need of phone charge

Drug & Alcohol Advice

sos_uk.jpeg

Hartpury took on the SOS UK Drug and Alcohol Impact Programme allowing us to document the support we provide for students and the actions we take for harm reduction. Together Hartpury and the Students' Union aim to gain this accreditation in the Summer of 2025. The following section details some of what we have worked on over the past two years.

We believe that a harm reduction approach is in the best interests of our student body and reduces barriers to accessing support. Not only is support important but having accurate and useful advice is essential to reducing harm and this will also be a part of this change in approach.

A harm reduction approach does not mean that we condone the use of illegal drugs or the misuse of prescription drugs, but we understand that some students may choose to use drugs during their time at university. Rather than simply telling students not to take drugs and hoping for the best, we want to ensure that students have the resources, support and knowledge needed to make informed choices and reduce harm.

Alcohol and other drugs increase the risk to students’ short and longer term physical and mental health, academic studies and relationships. Additionally, future career prospects can be damaged if students are involved in criminal activities. At Hartpury we offer a wealth of support to students via our wellbeing team."

Drug and Alcohol programme big wins:

Alcohol-free accommodation

Along with the recent data that evidenced alcohol not being as rooted in university culture as it once was, we opened our first alcohol-free on-site accommodation which was inundated with applications, resulting in another being opened for September 2024.

Drug & alcohol wellbeing support sessions on-site

Feedback on students not knowing where to seek safe, non-judgemental support led to the creation of focused wellbeing sessions that are easily accessible in the student courtyard. These sessions are advertised on the wellbeing Moodle page and routinely take place every 3rd Monday of the month

Building strong support connections

We have spent time in the SU getting to know the bars and clubs in Gloucester to understand the support and safety measures they have in place. We ensured all our bars had 'Ask for Angela' in place and took an active role in the safety of everyone.

Many venues in Gloucester and surrounding areas -  including Legends Bar at Hartpury are part of the "Ask For Angela" scheme. If you are feeling unsafe or need to exit out of an uncomfortable situation, you can approach the bar staff and "ask for Angela". They will know what this means and will discretely help you leave the venue and make sure you get home safely.
